Guest Column: There are better stories about celebs than who has a big ass

American society is preoccupied with the weight of celebrities to a sickening extent. They are expected to be dangerously thin, and
are ridiculed when they begin to look healthy, labeled as fat and slapped on magazine covers.

The latest trend is for these women to speak out and claim they are not fat, and then be put on even more magazine covers. Either way, we are paying way too much attention
to this. I do not care if Jessica Simpson gained five pounds, nor do I care how she feels about it.

I could understand attention being devoted to the topic if celebrities were speaking out and explaining the dangers of eating disorders. If they were sharing their struggles, and trying to help people, then attention would be due.

This fixation on the physical appearance of celebrities, scrutinized under a microscope, is such a waste of time. When we must peer into their personal lives, it should be done for a more worthwhile reason that may actually enlighten us.

While skimming over the news recently, a story caught my attention. The headline, in bold letters, read "Drew Barrymore's Dark Side." I clicked the link expecting to see
something interesting about the actress's rocky past, but instead found a post claiming ignorance - and even surprise - to the fact that she had ever been troubled.

It seems you would have had to live under a rock to be unaware of the quintessential child star's former problems. The book "Little Girl Lost" was written about her. Her tribulations have been fodder for "True Hollywood Stories" and other similar TV programs.

It wasn't even that long ago that she posed for Playboy and flashed David Letterman on late-night TV. I just don't understand how anyone could have been unaware of the drama
surrounding Barrymore's past. But maybe the size of Jessica Simpson's ass took precedent.

It is true that Barrymore has a sunny charisma about her. She's always smiling, and perhaps her bubbling personality and free spiritedness make her past so difficult to associate with her. She has certainly not fallen to the self-fulfilling prophecy that once looked to be her future.
