Dramatic rise in WCC enrollment strains stagnant staff and services

Decreased state and tax revenue has forced many schools to limit enrollment, an unlikely, but possible fate for WCC if economic decline continues

The downturned economy has spurned an increase in Washtenaw Community College enrollment. So expect the hustle and bustle around campus this summer to be more acute than last. "It's a historical trend that when unemployment goes up, community college enrollments especially go up," said Linda Blakey, associate vice president of Student Services.

CAD program is among several cut

Washtenaw Community College's Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) program has met the "inevitable." It was discontinued by a vote of the Board of Trustees. The certificate, advanced certificate and the associate's in applied science that students can earn in CAD now will end, as well as an associate's in architectural technology and interior design.

He had been mischaracterized as learningdisabled by the school district from a young age. Nursing to get new space in prep for OE renovation

Once a $1.06 million renovation in the Technical Industrial Building (TI) is completed this summer, the Washtenaw Community College programs Nursing and Health Science and Pharmacy Technology will move from the outdated Occupational Education Building (OE) to the revamped TI space.

Google's Gmail system will give college more for less

Few good things in life come free, but, once again, Google defies that well-worn adage. At no cost to the school, Washtenaw Community College will be switching from its outdated Web server, called Trig, to Google Apps. Google Apps will provide the school free e-mail storage for all of its accounts and an interface much like its e-mail service, Gmail.

College to revamp two parking lots and give motorcycles some space

This summer, Washtenaw Community College will restore two parking lots and provide a much-needed expansion for motorcycle parking. Lot 7, on the south side of the Gunder Myran Building near Clark Road, will get a full restoration: Facilities Management will fill the cracks, seal the lot and re-stripe it.

Custom Cars program remains despite changes

Under the header "Programs to be Discontinued" at the Board of Trustees meeting was a program that has brought fame and recognition to Washtenaw Community College from across the nation: Custom Cars and Concepts. In this program students design, customize and build a car as a class.

UA workers 'green' degree program

The United Associate (UA) at Washtenaw Community College has created a program that focuses on sustainability. The group for plumbers, pipe fitters, and heating, ventilation, air condition and refrigeration (HVACR) workers has a new degree that focuses on reduction in energy consumption.

The Sweet Spot of success

The Sweet Spot could soon have its success rewarded with a sweet deal. WCC President Larry Whitworth and Associate Vice President of Facilities Development and Operations Damon Flowers each confirmed that talks are under way to give the baked goods sales kiosk, which makes as much as $200 a day in revenue and earns more than Garrett's restaurant on some days, more space for its operation.
