Point Counterpoint: Swine Flu. . . A real scare or is the media hamming it up?

By now, we all know by now about the H1N1 virus, aka the swine flu. Media outlets have been latching on to the story so much they seem to be spreading the news faster than the actual disease. But all jokes aside, this is a serious issue. The scariest thing about it is that it's not up to you to protect yourself from contracting the fatal illness.

Editorial: Program cuts follow hollow words, promises from trustees

The recent cutting of the CAD program and "redesign" of the residential construction program at Washtenaw Community College (see story, Page 1) is disturbing for a number of reasons. Most importantly, several members of WCC's Board of Trustees acknowledged last month that the prospect of program cuts, especially residential construction, garnered more public sentiment than any other topic they have been associated with.

'Sexting' - what's the big deal, kids wonder

While lawmakers, police, parents and prosecutors anguish over the way teens use the latest technology, a lot of kids I know are wondering what all the fuss is about. They call it "sexting" - sending explicit messages and/or pictures via the Internet or, in most cases, cell phones.

To the editor: The articles in the March 2 edition of The Washtenaw Voice about "the great debate" state the preference of Facebook or MySpace users and somehow, in my view, ignored the importance of face-to-face interaction. However, the editors briefly compared and contrasted their respective views.

To the editor: Prior to the Vietnam War, the grading scale was A,B,C,D,E (or F). The scale stayed in place in the 60's and 70's (in a numerical format 4, 3, 2, 1, 0). Lower grades were not often given to avoid a student losing his academic standing and becoming draft eligible in an unpopular war.

Unfortunately, it's hard to prevent something like this. It sounds like the school has a pretty comprehensive security and camera system, which is great. But it's more of a response system than a preventative system. The best they could do is respond properly, but prevention is much more difficult.
